The success of every watershape requires consideration of basic physics and the laws of nature: volume, mass, gravity, velocity, pressure, friction, power, energy, thermodynamics, etc. At the collegiate level, universities teach these engineering fundamentals throughout several core classes. This Genesis 3 advanced course in fluid engineering will extrapolate the key fluid static and dynamic principles that apply to watershape engineering. Students will learn how to properly size plumbing and equipment, calculate TDH, operating costs, size chemical systems and other items. The sections on gravity-based systems will help designers understand open channel flows, water-in-transit, weirs, runnels, lazy rivers, venting, and more.
Students will learn how to get all of this critical information from their desk into the field where the details are really needed. Single-line schematic diagrams will be used to determine everything from line sizes, velocities and flow rates to the specific location of a critical check valve. Students will also receive a CD that contains custom watershape-specific software for use in determining line sizes, surge basin dimensions and other helpful tools. Resources also include many details that could be referenced in future construction.
An exam will test the student’s engineering fundamentals and a graded project will introduce everyone to the development of a single-line schematic diagram and equipment schedules for a unique water-in-transit design project.
Students are asked to bring a laptop. The program required for this course is Microsoft Excel or an equivalent spreadsheet program that runs Excel files.
INSTRUCTOR: DAVID J. PETERSON, P.E.
Peterson has been part of the watershaping industry since 1994, starting his own consulting firm in 2004 after stints with an aquatic-engineering firm and running the engineering department for Polaris Pool Systems. A Cal Poly graduate and registered civil engineer in multiple states, he now supports other watershape professionals worldwide with design, engineering and construction management services. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the California Society of Professional Engineers, and the Construction Specifications Institute. Peterson frequently writes for Watershapes Magazine and is expected to join the elite Society of Watershape Designers this year after completing the accredited Genesis 3 curriculum.

Understand the power of visual communication, with an entry level course in "Basic Perspective Drawing." The class will focus on the essentials of 1 & 2 point perspective drawing, vanishing points, horizon lines and the circle of distortion. You’ll learn to visually communicate with clients, architects and other builders, visually explain and understand building sections and improve your presentation skills.
INSTRUCTOR: DAVID TISHERMAN, GENESIS 3 CO-FOUNDER
David Tisherman is principal and founder of David Tisherman's Visuals, Inc., a watershape design/build firm with headquarters in Manhattan Beach, California. He, and partner, Kevin Fleming established a design/build East Coast office, Liquid Design (Cherry Hill, New Jersey). , to serve the Delaware Valley in 2001. Since 1979, he has advocated the highest possible standards for aquatic design, engineering, and construction. His education includes Bachelors Degrees in History and Industrial Design, and post graduate work at Pasadena, Art Center College of Design and Harvard, Graduate School of Design.
Named "the Frank Lloyd Wright of the pool industry" by Pool & Spa News, his educational background and award-winning design experience is unmatched in the industry. He is a master water-effects designer who understands the art of water and brings that vision to life without compromise.
David was a Department Chair, Member of the Adjunct Faculty and Guidance Committee at U.C.L.A. He has taught architectural rendering and presentation, for more than a decade and was recognized as “Teacher of the Year in 1984”. He is one of only two people to ever win "Best of Show" in the NSPI's International Design Awards Competition. At present, he is the Chairman of the Society of Watershape Designers and an Industry expert for The California State Licensing Board. His work has been featured on the cover of Luxury Pools, Architectural Digest and The Robb Report. Additional publications include: Designer's West, House & Garden, Tycoon Magazine, Millionaire Magazine and the Los Angeles Times Magazine. He has also been published in hardcover books including Best of the Best, Best of L.A., Reflections on the Pool, California Designs for Swimming and Dream Pools. He is a contributing Editor for WaterShape Magazine. |
